Welcome to First Grade!
Welcome to an exciting new school year (2026-2027) at Sycamore Academy! I am absolutely thrilled to be your child's teacher this year. First grade is a magical time of immense growth, discovery, and joy. Together, we will build a supportive community where your child feels safe to take risks, explore new ideas, and step into their role as a leader.
Our Core Philosophies
Constructivist Approach
We believe children learn best by doing. Students do not just memorize facts. They actively construct knowledge through hands-on exploration, asking questions, and solving real-world problems.
Growth Mindset
We embrace the power of "Yet." Mistakes are celebrated as proof that we are trying and learning. Students learn to challenge themselves.
Full Value Contract
Our classroom operates on a Full Value Contract created together by the students. This agreement binds us to:
- Validate each other
- Work safely
- Listen actively
- Give full effort
- Offer honest feedback
Leadership & Character
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Leaders
We integrate the 7 habits to cultivate personal responsibility and leadership skills:
- š ļø Habit 1: Be Proactive ā I am in charge of myself.
- šÆ Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind ā I have a plan and set goals.
- š Habit 3: Put First Things First ā I work first, then I play.
- š¤ Habit 4: Think Win-Win ā I look for solutions where everyone wins.
- š Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood ā I listen before I talk.
- šŖµ Habit 6: Synergize ā Together is better.
- š± Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw ā I take care of my body, mind, and soul.
Activities and Special Events
There will be a lot of fun activities and special events such as the Science, History, and Art showcases, a grade level event, Mad Science Club, and more! You will receive information and details about our fun events ahead of time.
1st Grade Standards

Students learn to read short texts, write simple sentences, add and subtract numbers, and understand basic science and social studies ideas and more! Students will also learn music and art!
Iām really looking forward to teaching your child this year!
