Rural:  Areas away from cities, usually near farms
Suburban:  Areas near cities, usually with houses and stores
Unsettled: An area of land where no people live
Urban: Areas that are cities or parts of cities

We will be reviewing what we learned about Sacramento in 1900 and 2000 - how the land changed, population, etc. Next, we are looking at the People and the Environment wall map.  You need to look at the key on the map and the colors and descriptions show how land is being used throughout the area. We are going to locate the following areas.

Together, we are going to make a chart and look at Information Cards.  I've attached a copy of the white board notes from our class meeting.

After, you will use this google form to answer questions about what you learned today.

Due:

Assignment

LANGUAGE ARTS:
1.  Raz-Kids:  Please logon to your Raz-Kids and do the assignment I have left for you. The book is Rapunzel.  Remember, you need to pass the quiz so take your time!

4.  Reading:  Please be sure to read a minimum of 15 minutes!  You can read a book from home, the book bag, or a book of your choice (at your level) on Raz-Kids.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Think about and discuss what we read in the two letters yesterday.  Specifically, Paul was describing some of the landscape in Sacrament to his grandmother.  Look back at Visual Aid # 3 and Visual Aid #4.  What happened to Sacramento between the time Paul (1900s) wrote to his grandmother and when Tony (2000) wrote to his grandmother?

You should think about the change in the area, the city, and how the landscape changed.  Why do you think it changed?

What people do in a place or how they use the land, can change the landscape.  Sacramento has a long history of people living there, doing many different jobs, and using the land in many different ways.  Every change people made caused changes in the landscape over time, which is what we see in the letters from Paul and Tony.  We also see them in the photographs from those time periods.
Then, fill out the GOOGLE FORM BY CLICKING HERE!

The last activity you need to complete today is finishing pages 2 & 3 in your Student Workbook.  You need either crayons and/or colored pencils.

In the workbook, under "100 Years Ago" you should draw a picture showing what you think your community might have looked like 100 years ago.  On the section "Today" you should draw a picture that shows the landscape in your community the way it looks today.  Make sure your drawings include buildings, people, plants, technology for the time period (example would be lights or cars), landforms, or bodies of water.

Take your time and do a great job with your drawings!  This work counts!!!  Parents, please take pictures of pgs. 2 & 3 to turn in to me.

Thank you!!!

1.  Read background information (attachment).
2.  Key Vocabulary:  Landscape (Definition:  The things you see in an area of land, such as trees and hills)
3.  Discuss - Have you ever moved into a new house?  What about moving into a different town or city?  Do you remember the name of the communities where you lived?
4.  Today you are going to read letters from two boys who moved from Chicago, Illinois to Sacramento, California.  Can you find Chicago and Sacramento on the United States map (attached)?  The two boys who wrote the letters both moved to Sacramento, California but it was 100 years apart.  One boy moved in 2000 and the other boy moved in 1900.  Your task today is to be a detective.  You are going to read both letters and look over them carefully to find clues about what things have changed in the 100 years.  First, try and find things that are the same and then find things that are different.
5.  Once you are finished, go to the Google Form and do your writing response. LINK TO CA LAND-L1
